How to Prepare for Your Blood Test
Before Your Appointment (Pre-blood test)
To help ensure accurate results and a smooth experience, please follow these instructions:
What to do before your appointment:
-
Hydrate Well – 2-3 litres of water the day before your appointment. Being well-hydrated makes it easier to find a vein.
-
Follow Fasting Instructions – If your test requires fasting, you must not eat or drink anything except plain water for 12 hours before your appointment (unless told otherwise). You may take your usual medications unless advised differently.
-
Avoid Exercise, Alcohol and Recreational drugs – Refrain from vigorous activity and alcohol for 24 hours before the test, as these can affect your results.
-
Dress Comfortably – Wear short sleeves or loose clothing that allows easy access to your arm.
-
Bring Identification – A valid photo ID will be required.
Please Let Me Know If You:
-
Feel faint or anxious around needles or blood
-
Have any medical conditions like clotting disorders or are on blood thinners
-
Have had surgery (e.g., mastectomy) or have a preferred arm for blood draws
-
Have an active infection, or if you’re feeling unwell on the day
-

During Your Appointment
-
The procedure usually takes 10–15 minutes.
-
A trained and insured phlebotomist will cleanse your skin, apply a tourniquet, and draw blood using a sterile needle and vacuum tubes.
-
You may feel a small pinch or pressure. Most people find it quick and relatively painless.
-
After the draw, pressure will be applied to stop any bleeding, and a plaster will be applied.
After Your Appointment (Post-Phlebotomy)
What to Expect

Some mild bruising or tenderness at the site is normal and should fade within a few days.
